Biography

Safiya Chicktay is an experienced physiotherapist with over two decades of clinical expertise across hospital-based, sports, orthopaedic, neurological, and respiratory physiotherapy. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy from the University of the Western Cape in 2000. Following graduation, Safiya worked at Polokwane Tertiary Hospital for five years, where she gained extensive experience in acute and long-term patient care. During this time, she served as Head of the Clinical Section for one year, reflecting her leadership ability and advanced clinical competence in a high-pressure hospital environment. In 2004, Safiya was part of the physiotherapy team at the SA Games, contributing to the assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation of competitive athletes. She later expanded her international experience by working in the United Kingdom for six years, across both NHS and private healthcare settings. Her UK experience covered a wide range of specialities, including Intensive Care Units (ICU), respiratory care units, medical wards, post-surgical rehabilitation, and neurological physiotherapy. This diverse exposure has equipped her with a comprehensive, evidence-based approach to complex and multi-system conditions. Safiya has continued to advance her clinical skills through extensive postgraduate training. This includes completing Global Upper and Lower Quadrant courses, a Postgraduate Diploma in Orthopaedic Manipulative Therapy, and three postgraduate stand-alone modules in Sports Physiotherapy. These qualifications enhance her ability to assess and treat musculoskeletal, sports, and movement-related conditions with precision. Safiya’s clinical approach is patient-centred and holistic, combining strong manual therapy skills with functional rehabilitation to help patients recover safely, move confidently, and return to optimal function.
